Windows and Glass Evolved Over Time

The word Window first appeared in the early 13th century, and originally referred to an open hole in a roof. The word Window replaced the Old English word 'eagþyrl', which literally meant 'eye-hole,' and 'eye-door'. Because of the transparent nature of clear glass, people don't pay much attention to it because it is something that we look through, not at.

Over time, windows were built that protected the inhabitants from the elements and transmitted light. In the Far East, paper was used to fill windows. The ancient Romans were the first known to use glass for windows. By the early 19th century, sliding single and double-hung windows had come into popular use. The Industrial Revolution brought about major advances in steel manufacturing, permitting the production of steel framed windows.

Fire-resistant steel window frames became the standard for factories, commercial and residential buildings. In modern architecture the use of metal frames for windows in most residential and commercial construction has made possible to use of ever greater areas of glass.
Windows are often wall to wall and floor to ceiling, and frequently shop windows and other similar large glass areas are both walls and windows.
